Highway Distance Metric

Maybe I'm driving incorrectly or there's a setting I can switch, but telling me how many miles I'm supposed to stay on the highway until my exit is not intuitive. I feel like any other metric (time on highway, exit name, exit number, etc.) would be more useful and something I actually track as opposed to miles traveled. Sometimes it will tell me my exit right when I get on the highway, but more often than not, the directions say "stay on this road for # miles".
